# Yearly gift budget by occasion

Work out what a year of gifts costs — people times occasions times your usual spend — and what to set aside each month.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://giftideas.fyi/tools/gift-budget-by-occasion). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Enter people you buy for.
2. Enter occasions per person per year.
3. Enter average spend per gift.
4. Read the result.

## How it works

We multiply the number of people by the occasions you buy for each of them. That is the count of gifts in a year.

The gift count times your average spend is the annual total.

The monthly figure is the annual total divided by twelve — the amount to put aside so the money is there when an occasion lands.

Every figure comes from your own numbers. Nothing here assumes what a gift should cost.

> This is arithmetic on your numbers, not advice on what to spend.

## Questions

### Some people get bigger gifts than others. Does the average still work?

Yes for planning. An average smooths the expensive and cheap gifts out. For a tighter plan, run the tool once per spending band — for example close family at one average, everyone else at another — and add the totals.

### Which occasions should I count?

Only the ones you actually buy for. A birthday and a December holiday for each person is a common baseline. Weddings, baby showers and thank-you gifts can be added as a separate line.

### Does this include wrapping and shipping?

No. If you mail gifts or buy wrapping, add a small amount to your average spend to cover it.
